Review: Squashbox Theatre at Stockwood Discovery Centre

After a week of glorious sunshine I was really looking forward to an outdoor theatre performance in the beautiful grounds at Stockwood Discovery Centre. However, this was half term, so obviously the clouds were rolling in as we arrived. Determined to see this outdoor show, I was relieved it had been relocated indoors – can’t wait to return for an outdoor show this Summer though!

We were going to see Curious Creatures by Squashbox Theatre. The blurb goes…

Welcome to the ‘Curious Creatures’ wildlife park, established by Jeremiah Johnson: world-renowned explorer, zoologist and animal collector. Nobody knows more about animals than him. Unfortunately, Jeremiah Johnson is currently lost somewhere in the jungles of Africa, so he has handed the running of the park over to his inexperienced nephew Craig… and things don’t quite go as planned.

For 50 minutes were were entertained with puppets, comedy, slapstick and live music – plus lots of amazing natural history facts! We met all sorts of animals from performing fleas, skateboarding snails and gymnastic gerbils to an irritable alligator, over-excited elephants, and a very intelligent orang-utan.

Although recommended for children aged 5+ my 3 year old squealed, giggled and shrieked her way through the whole thing. My younger daughter didn’t get so much out of it but she was able to wander around so it didn’t matter. Us grown ups had a great time though – the show genuinely made both my husband and I laugh out loud!

Luckily the foreboding clouds never delivered any rain so we were able to make the most of Stockwood Discovery Centre after the show. We’d taken a picnic along so got to enjoy that on the outdoor benches before a cheeky ice cream from the cafe. The girls played in the adventure playground and explored the gardens before heading home – a brilliant family day out.
